FAQ's - Surf Lessons

Do I need to be a strong swimmer? Not necessarily. The lessons will take place in water that is about waist deep. We will never venture out farther than you feel comfortable, and your wetsuit will provide extra buyoancy. However, you will want to feel comfortable with the ocean and bring an adventuresome attitude.

Will I be freezing the whole time? No. Even though the average water temperature in Westport beaches ranges from low to mid 50's, today's wetsuit technology is quite good. The local surf shops that will provide your rental wetsuit know exactly how to keep people warm in the water, and we will limit our time in the water to 2 hours to ensure that we do not over do it.

Do I need to bring any equipment? No. You should wear a swimsuit to wear under your wetsuit. Wetsuit and board rental is not included in the Surf & Sand fee, and is payable at the surf shop (approximately $35). If you already have a wetsuit and board, we'll need to make sure its appropriate for our beach conditions before we go out.

Can I bring my kids? What about my Grandpa? We can instruct children as young as 10 years old and as old as 90. The important thing is to have a positive attitude and feel comfortable in the ocean.

    FAQ's - Boot Camp

Am I in good enough shape? If you can walk from the state park parking lot down to the water's edge, you can take this class. We use the resistance of the sand, varying reps, and small differences in motion to make each exercise challenging for all levels of fitness. Whether you are a marathoner or a couch potato, you'll get a great workout and have fun doing it.

Why is it so hard to run in the sand? Running on sand is harder than running on a typical solid surface because every time you attempt to push off it, it gives way, requiring runners to exert approximately 1.6 times the energy that would be required to maintain the same speed on solid ground. For walkers, make that 2.1 ot 2.7 times for energy. (From The Washington Post).

What should I bring? Bring water, a beach towel, and a good attitude. Also, dress in layers and bring rain gear, because weather at the beach is unpredictible and we work out rain or shine!
